Who is your favorite theologian? For my dad’s generation (and just about anyone in the latter half of the 20th century), the theologian they most often looked to and trusted was Herschel Hobbs. Hobbs was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City for 23 years. In addition to his pastoral ministry, Dr. Hobbs also hosted “The Baptist Hour”, a weekly radio program that aired for 18 years. Hobbs also wrote over 150 books, many of them written to help lay people understand theology and as support for Sunday School lessons produced by the Baptist Sunday School Board (LifeWay). Dr. Hobbs also served as the chairman of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message.
