Next week (April 15-19) is Theology Week here at my blog. Specifically our topic is “Why Theology Matters in Small Group”. We have enlisted some top notch pastors from Oklahoma to write guest articles for us (sorry if you’re not from Oklahoma, but I do work for the BGCO). There will be at least one new article every day, Monday through Friday for Theology Week.
You may be wondering why all the emphasis next week on theology in small groups and Sunday Schools. Isn’t theology the realm of seminary professors and the pastor’s sermon each week? Well, although we do have a lot of emphasis in those two areas, the lives of people participating in small groups is another place where theology hits reality. Every day believers wrestle with thoughts, attitudes, and actions from a world that has been blinded to God’s truth. Theology not only grounds us so that our compass really does point to “spiritual true north”, but it also gives us the ability to reason with others when their beliefs contradict God’s truth. God really does want us to know the truth. “Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth” (John 17:17).
Another reason we are focusing on theology is that it is part of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma’s strategy to emphasize Sunday School and small groups in our churches. This initiative, called ReConnect Sunday School, has four primary connectors: connecting people to Jesus, His Truth, His community, and His mission. Theology is vital to all four of these connections, but especially when it comes to connecting people to His Truth. Living your life apart from God’s Truth (theology) is essentially the choice of living a lie. Theology matters in small group because we want to live our lives in Truth.
Have you ever heard someone say, “I wish Sunday School wasn’t so shallow” or “I just want to go deep in our small group”? These comments are a way to express a God-given desire within each of us to know God. “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for You, O God” (Psalm 42:1). It does not matter if your small group is full of new believers, lost people, knowledgeable saints or a blend of all three; God is calling us into a close, deep relationship with Him. A small group is a place where the deep truths of Scripture can be studied and applied to our daily life.
If you are a Sunday School or small group leader, Theology Week is for you! The posts are written for small group leaders because theology does matter in small group. You don’t have to be seminary professor to lead a small group, but you do need to wade into the deep waters of theology and learn how to swim. Theology Week here at the blog is for small group leaders just like you, whether you have been leading or teaching a group for a few decades or a few days.
Also, I am going to be tweeting four quotes a day by theologians like AW Tozer, Adrian Rogers, and Charles Spurgeon on Twitter. These are short gems of theology that will lead you to consider and possibly even wrestle with some profound theological thoughts.
