Yesterday I shared the Leadership Covenant that we developed at First Baptist Church of Moore, Oklahoma. During the process that the LifeGroup Department Directors and I invested in developing this covenant, one of our leaders made this simple, yet very profound statement:
This leadership covenant is one-sided! It has what the church leaders expect of its Bible study leadership.
Why isn’t there something that we Bible study leaders can expect of our church staff?
Great point! So we added another aspect to our LifeGroup Leader Covenant. It is now a two-page document with the LifeGroup leader expectations on one side; and on the reverse are the expectations these leaders have of its church staff! I’m sure this has happened before, but I’m unaware of a “bilateral” covenant between both LifeGroup (Sunday School) leaders and the church leadership (staff). Here is what we developed.
Staff Leaders’ Covenant with LifeGroup Leaders
The education staff of First Baptist Church believes that LifeGroups is our church’s primary strategy to make disciples by connecting the lost and church members together in order that they may:
- Know Jesus as Savior and Lord;
- Connect to each other in friendship and ministry;
- Learn God’s truth through lifechanging Bible study;
- Be on mission together as a LifeGroup.
As a church staff, we agree…
To provide resources and curriculum to assist our LifeGroups’ mission to make disciples.
To provide equipping opportunities that challenge and enable our LifeGroup leaders to be better teachers and leaders.
To do our best to grow as leaders ourselves and be a model of teamwork, ministry, and shared service to our LifeGroup leaders and church family.
To lift our LIfeGroups and leadership in prayer to God. We will pray for LifeGroups to be committed to the Great Commission and the Great Commandment, and for our LifeGroups to be filled with people who are on mission to put the Gospel of Christ on display with each other and our community.
To be available and accessible to our LifeGroup leaders and to respond to the people we serve in an appropriate and godly manner.
To serve together as a team, and to mutually support and respect each other. We will also serve our LifeGroups with passion and respect.
