I am serving a stint at First Baptist Church of Moore, Oklahoma as their interim Minister of Education. I am loving this opportunity to serve alongside these wonderful people. On Saturday, I sent the LifeGroup (Sunday School) leaders of the church the following email. I got so much positive feedback from it that I thought I would share it here too.
While out mowing my yard this afternoon, I felt a need to pray for you… all 245 of you who tomorrow are going to step into your LifeGroup as a director or a teacher. I want you to know that I am praying for you to set the tone of your group tomorrow; and that your group will have an atmosphere of hope because our God is the all-powerful God of the universe and His future for us is one of hope, not of calamity and despair (Jeremiah 29:11).
I am praying for you as you minister to the people in your group who are hurting because of a difficult marriage or a life disappointment; for parents who are struggling with their kids; and for kids who have to grow up sooner than they should because of the pressures and sin of our world. Let us pray for the Lord to intervene, for it is the Lord that fights for His people (Exodus 23:10).
I’m praying for you as you open the Word of God tomorrow. May you be bold as Peter and John so that your group will see that you have spent time with Jesus(Acts 4:13). I pray that your group’s study of God’s Word will be as sharp as a two-edged sword so that it will divide the soul and spirit of the people in your group (Hebrews 4:12) and sanctify them in truth (John 17:17).
My prayer is for your group to fall in love with Jesus all over again!
Tomorrow, about 1200 people are going to gather together in small groups all over 0ur campus. These people are going to be led by:
- 73 wonderful, devoted people who will kneel on the carpet of their room
to teach the love of Christ to some little preschoolers;
- 28 adults will lead some very energetic grade school children to
discover the truth of Scripture in LifeGroup tomorrow;
- 26 adult leaders are going to challenge the teens in our student
ministry to be obedient to Christ and embrace a lifestyle that will bring glory and honor to our Lord;
- 17 leaders will be ministering to people in our single adult groups and
leading them through issues like single parenting and learning to trust again;
- 101 directors and teachers are going to share the truth and power of
God’s Word to our married adults.
Finally, I pray for each of us to understand the reality that this world is fleeting but that the eternal destiny of each person on this planet hangs in the balance of whether they know Jesus Christ as Lord of their life. I pray that the people in our groups will be ambassadors of Christ in our homes, schools, work places, and neighborhoods; and we realize that God is making His appeal to others through us (1 Corinthians 5:20).
Let me say thank you for your ministry and your service to the Lord and to His church at First Baptist. I pray that through God’s work in you, your group will be blessed tomorrow (Genesis 12:1-3).
We are blessed… so let’s pray for each other as we gather together for small group Bible study and corporate worship tomorrow.
