It’s a new year and you are probably considering some new year’s resolutions. There are many resolutions that we can make that will improve our life, three of the most common that I’ve seen this week are: exercise, diet, and get out of debt. All excellent resolutions.
What if I asked you to join me in another resolution that in just 20 minutes a day will change your life?
Let’s read the entire Bible together this year.
That’s right, let’s commit to be accountability partners and let’s read the Bible together this year. Here’s the plan: My friend George Guthrie has developed a chronological read of the entire Bible. In other words, we are going to read the Bible in 2012 in the order in which the events took place.
Why this kind of public commitment:
First, I’ve discovered that many Christians have never read the entire Bible. We have a tendency to default to our handful of favorite verses or stories. But in Acts 20:27 Paul states that he did not shrink back from teaching the whole counsel of God. When we are only familiar with our favorite passages, we are missing out on the whole counsel of God that He shares in the Bible. All 66 books of the Bible are God’s inspired word, so let’s read them all – together!
Second, many Christians have read the entire Bible and have participated in some kind of annual read the Bible plan. But few Christians have read the Bible through in chronological order. It will be a new experience to read the Bible as the biblical record unfolds.
Third, well let’s face it – we need accountability. I have discovered that it is much easier to read the Bible consistently when I have an accountability partner. My wife and I inspire each other to stick to our new year’s resolution to read the Bible (we just committed to do it again in 2012). Just seeing her sitting in the chair reading the Bible inspires me to join her. We are branching out to our online friends to join us and let’s commit together to read the Bible through chronologically this year. If a chronologic plan doesn’t appeal to you, then pick another plan like the M’cheyne or 4 + 1 plan and join us anyway.
You might even consider asking your small group to commit to join you and read the Bible through in 2012.
So here’s a special offer. Leave a comment below about your commitment to read the Bible through in 2012. At the end of this week, one person will be selected from the comments below to receive a free Holman Christian Study Bible. That’s a really sweet deal btw…
Here is a link to the chronologic reading plan. Print it on both sides and fold it up in your Bible. You’re ready to go.
