Oklahoma is focusing on the process of making disciples! We are calling it ReConnect Sunday School and we are in the very beginning stages of launching this initiative of awakening a sleeping giant – Sunday School. You may call it by another name like Connection Groups, LifeGroups, Community Groups, Home Groups… you get the idea. But most churches already have a largely unutilized process for reaching lost people and helping them get a good start on their new life as a follower of Jesus Christ. This process is the church’s small group organization, which for most churches is Sunday School.
Leaders from the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma are visiting 26 of our associations in March and April in an effort to share the ReConnect strategy with as many pastors and churches as possible. At each location, we share our new definition of Sunday School and then talk about three commitments that we are asking our churches to make. The pic on the right is the great group we had at the Beckham-Mills Association Rally at First Baptist Church of Elk City.
Our state convention is aligning its own ministries with Sunday School. Our men’s retreat is encouraging men to follow up their wonderful retreat experience by going home and getting involved in Sunday School. Our State Evangelism Conference is engaging our churches to involve their individual Sunday School groups in mission projects. We are also in the process of transalating the workbook for the ReConnect Rallies into Spanish.
By the way, our definition of Sunday School:
Sunday School is the church’s primary strategy to connect people to:
Jesus, His Truth, His community and His mission.
And here are the three commitments that we are asking our churches to make as part of our ReConnect strategy:
1. Make Sunday School your church’s primary strategy.
2. Start new groups.
3. Equip and train your Sunday School leaders.
The people attending these rallies are enthusiastic about their church using Sunday School as its primary process of making disciples. We’ve got 6 more weeks to go, and I’ll keep you up to date on the ReConnect Road Trip!
