ReConnect is about focusing the church’s Sunday School and other ministries on a process to impact lostness in the community and make disciples. But church members and especially the leaders need a strategy. They need something that they can almost touch. The strategy needs some handles. In other words, what is the plan and how do you do it?
The ReConnect START Campaign is a process to help engage the church leadership with a biblical and practical strategy to make disciples. Although the official campaign does not begin until the fall, church leaders need to prepare the church for what is about to happen. This preparation is vital and takes time. In explaining the amount of time advance planning takes for a big project, BGCO Executive Director, Dr. Anthony Jordan (@DrAnthonyJordan) often uses the illustration of the Devon Tower in Oklahoma City. More time was spent digging and placing the foundations for the 50 story building than it took to build the skyscraper itself.
We have designed the ReConnect START Campaign into three sections – Ready, Set, and START. Here is an overview of the Ready phase.
ReConnect START Campaign officially launched on Sunday, January 26 with Pray for New Groups Day. Every great spiritual awakening that has happened in America began with prayer. Although we may have plans and strategies, I think we all know that what we do we are doing for the Lord and for His glory. If you were unable to participate on January 26, then select a Sunday and lead your church to pray for new groups, new leaders, and for wisdom and guidance from the Lord.
People need information. The more information people have about the value of Sunday School and small groups, the better their commitment and support will be to begin new groups and improve the current ones. To better inform the church about the value of Sunday School and small groups, we have several opportunities available to the church leadership.
- The ReConnect website. Send your people to www.reconnectss.com for information about the START Campaign. This website is an online training site for Sunday School leaders and pastors. We even have a “New Groups” badge that your members can earn.
- Transform Conference. The Transform Conference is a Sunday School training event from LifeWay that we are hosting at Quail Springs Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. This conference equips Sunday School teachers with Bible study skills, and trains pastors and Sunday School directors on specific actions they can do to strengthen their Sunday School. We are also sharing important information about the ReConnect START Campaign at this event. Register your Sunday School leaders at www.lifeway.com/transform.
- ReConnect START Road Trip. This spring, we are conducting START Rallies that are available in your local association. You do not have to travel hundreds of miles to attend. There is a stop on the START Road Trip near you if you live in Oklahoma.
A brief word about the value of the the Road Trip. We have found from past experience that it is beneficial for both the pastor and some key lay leaders to attend a stop on the Road Trip. It is important for lay leaders to hear the information that is shared about the START Campaign. When the pastor begins preparations to do the START Campaign in the church, he already has some key leaders that understand the process and can help communicate it to the rest of the church.
