Each year, the Church & Family Equipping Team (that’s the team I’m on by the way) puts together the Missional Ministry Conference. Well, this will be our sixth MMC to put together, so it’s not like an institution that we just have to do every year. In fact, we have always said that when the MMC runs its course, we are going to bury it. One thing the churches in our state do not need is another legacy event!
But I’m excited about our MMC this year. For the first time, rather than bringing in a “name” speaker like Ed Stetzer or JD Greear, we have asked Micah Fries, pastor at Frederick Boulevard Baptist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri to be our keynote. This is a response to last year’s conference evaluations, in which our participants told us they wanted a practitioner this year… not that JD Greear isn’t a practitioner, but he does pastor a megachurch… and most of us do not!
Micah and I have talked about his presentations at the MMC, and he sent us his topics and a brief descriptor for each. So here you go:
Session 1 – Thursday General Session
Portrait of the Gospel – Luke 9:23-27. When many church members are asked to define the Gospel, they will give a rudimentary answer that generally serves as a basic introduction to Christ. When we so treath the Gospel, we radically minimize it to the detriment of the church. We are going to dig deep and understand more fully the ramifications of the Gospel, not just for the non-believer, but the believer as well.
Session 2 – Thursday Breakout
The Gospel and Church Mission – (1 Corinthians 9) We often hear that there are two kinds of churches, those committed to depth and those committed to relevance. Let’s consider and study Paul’s words to the church at Corinth and recognize that faithful missiology is grounded in faithful tehology and will result in well-rounded ecclesiology.
Session 3 – Thursday evening session
The Gospel and the Next Generation – 2 Timothy 2:2 Engaging the next generatio is done well as we engage them, and teach them, in the context of relationship and not handing off programs. In 2 Timothy 2:2 we will consider some of paul’s admonitions to Timothy, specifically from the perspective of a spiritual father engaging his son, with special notice taken of Paul’s direction of Timothy to the mission of the church – making disciples.
Session 4 – Friday morning
The Gospel and the Missionary (Making the Gospel Personal) – Philippians 2:12-18 While we often spend much time coaching churches and leaders through pastoring the church, we also need to spend some time considering Paul’s words to the church at Philippi in reference to pastoring ourselves with the Gospel.
