Aside from the pastor, there probably is not a more important person in the church when it comes to discipleship, evangelism, leadership development, and the overall health of the church than the Minister of Education. A Minister of Education oversees the overall ministry of discipleship, Bible study, community, and ministry of the church. Yet this is one of the least understood positions on the church staff. There is no doubt, Ministers of Education (aka: discipleship pastor, associate pastor, etc.) are a breed a part.
Many ME’s serve in areas with few other staff members around that can relate to them. We have educators here in Oklahoma that are often 30-50 miles from the next ME. Though the student minister and pastor may often travel to conferences and seminars, plus be away another week or two for camps and mission trips; the ME is often expected to be in town for most of the year.
Because ME’s are so spread out, we often have trouble networking. I have learned as an educator in Texas, Arizona, and now in Oklahoma that ME’s treasure time that they can spend with another ME or group of educators.
Since we can not always get together often enough, we are offering an online learning experience for Education Ministers at our new online training website, www.reconnectss.com. This website began in mid-October and offers online training for pastors, ME’s, Sunday School directors, and age-group leaders of Sunday Schools and Small Groups. During the week of January 13-17, we are featuring ME Week at reconnectss.com. During this week, we have asked some ME’s to share their ideas on some issues that are vital to the work of an educator.
Clint Hayes, Southern Hills Baptist Church of Oklahoma City
Jeff Young, Prestonwood Baptist Church of Plano, Texas
Allan Taylor, First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Georgia
Steve Stege, First Baptist Church of Frisco, Texas
During ME Week, we will feature a brief 12 minute video every day by one of these educators. In addition, you are encouraged to leave comments and ask questions. Our ME panel will interact with the comments all week. It will be a great opportunity to learn from the panel and also learn from each other as we leave comments and insights about each of the topics discussed.
In addition, since we had everyone together to video their individual segments we decided to video a panel discussion with them. The panel discussion will be available on Tuesday, January 14.
If you want to participate, you need to complete registration for www.reconnectss.com. Simply fill out the registration form when you visit the site and you will automatically be able to view all of the videos for ME Week.
Also, we are using the Twitter hashtag #MEweek.
Feel free to invite other ME’s to join us for this week and be part of the online community at ME Week.
