Most of us would love to be part of something that we are integrally involved in and also something that is much, much bigger than ourselves. Right now there are churches, pastors, denominations, conventions, associations, small group leaders, and Sunday School teachers across our nation and world that joining together to try to start 100,000 new groups this year.
It sounds big! We know that a church’s active participation will increase by about 10 people for every new group started. If my rudimentary Texas education is working, that is a growth of around 1,000,000 new people participating in church small groups this year. We also know from the book Transformational Groups that each group will engage about three lost people with the Gospel. That’s 300,000 lost people that have a chance to respond to the Gospel this year.
We know that starting a group is one of the most effective actions we can take to disciple more people, engage more people with the Gospel, and develop new leaders.
If you are in Oklahoma, we are asking our churches to make a commitment to start as many new groups as possible this year, and with a launch date of September 7 if that fits your church calendar. In turn, we send our commitments on to the Groups Matter folks at LifeWay.
Here are two places to go to make your commitment:
Oklahoma – register here
Groups Matter – register here
Why are there two locations to register?
The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma began asking its churches to make commitments to start new groups over a year ago in January of 2013. As a result, we already have commitment forms and a strategy designed for our own new groups initiative called the ReConnect START Campaign. We ask our Oklahoma churches to send their new groups information to the state convention by using the online form above. We do forward all of the groups that register for the START Campaign on to Groups Matter so that they can be added to the national total.
