This post is the second in a series to the people who are serving as host homes for Edmond’s First Baptist Church The Gospel Revolution campaign. If you’re not a member of EFBC, you’re still welcome to follow along. There will be a post every Tuesday for the next 8 weeks about our effort to reach our friends and neighbors by hosting small groups in our homes.
This week is “nervous” week. You are probably wondering if anyone is going to come to your new home group. The later it gets in the week, the more nervous you are probably going to be. What we need to do this week is do everything that we can to invite our friends and neighbors to our home and then leave the results up to God. Here are some suggestions for you this week to help get the word out about your new home group.
Prayer walk your neighborhood
Each evening around 7:30 or so, take a walk around your neighborhood. If you’re like me, I could use the exercise anyway. As you walk by each house, pray for the people that live there, even if you don’t know their name(s). Also, it is early spring, and there is a good chance that you will not be the only person walking your neighborhood; other people will be walking too. Be sure to engage them in conversation. Go beyond a nodding of the head. Visit with them for a minute or two.
Hand out Doorhangers
We have plenty of doorhangers with Gospel Revolution graphics. Be sure to fill out the information on the reverse side of the doorhanger that has important information on it (your name, address, phone, and email). Be sure to put the date and time that your group is starting. Hang one on every door in your neighborhood. Avoid the temptation to skip a home because you don’t think they will attend anyway, or because you don’t get along with them. This may be the moment that God is going to use to change their life, so invite the neighbors that have weeds in their yard, park their clunker of a car on the street, and have an unleashed Rottweiler. By the way, don’t wait until the day before your first group meeting to hand out the doorhangers. You want to do this Wednesday or Thursday.
We have made some yard signs to put in your yard this week. The sign uses the same graphic as the doorhanger. The yard sign does a couple of things:
- It identifies your house as the location of the home group. If you handed out the doorhanger, the yard sign helps link the doorhanger to your home.
- It serves as a daily reminder for everyone in your neighborhood that there is a home group starting this week. They may have looked at the doorhanger and thrown it away, but the yard sign continues to be a reminder.
Make some personal enlistments
Are you good friends with some people in your neighborhood? Then consider pre-enlisting them! Ask them if they would be a co-host for example. I know you may be thinking, “But they aren’t church members” or something like that. Ask them if they could bring some snacks. Maybe they could be in charge of making sure everyone fills out a card at the meeting. If you give someone a job, they are going to do two things. One, they will show up! Two, they will probably tell some other people about the group and invite them.
If you need more doorhangers or want to pick up a yard sign, stop by the Gospel Revolution kiosk in the church foyer this Sunday, or come by the church offices during the week. This is going to be great! Stepping out in faith is always risky, but you are going to be fine. Wel also have more workbooks in case you have a lot of people come to your home this Sunday.
