I’ve been in Shawnee, Oklahoma at the 104th annual meeting of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma this week. Great turnout and we had super hosts at Oklahoma Baptist University. We met at OBU to help them celebrate their 100th year!
Like many other of our denomination’s state conventions, we are wrestling with the practical implications of the GCR task force’s recommendations to our state’s ministries and budget. More on that at a later time…
The rest of the week has been busy catching up on office work and writing lots of notes and articles that are part of my job. Here’s a quick look at some highlights for me this week.
First, we had an OBMEA (Oklahoma Baptist Minister of Education Association) Roundtable on Monday at the annual convention. This was our third time to do this roundtable and we had about 35 ME’s participating. Good discussion, especially about the future of technology in our ministries and also engaging emerging generations with the Gospel. We also had my friend and Tennessee Sunday School specialist Dr. Mark Miller with us as our banquet speaker.
While at the convention, we also had a booth where folks could register to win up to 5 free registrations for their church leaders to the Missional Ministry Conference on March 24-25, also at OBU. 38o individuals registered for the drawing, which was way more than we expected. Our theme for the MMC next year is “The Gospel-Centered Church”. We are doing some creative thinking for the breakout sessions, including one session where we group the leaders by their church’s context to dialogue and learn from each other about being Gospel-Centered.
A third highlight for me at the BGCO annual meeting was getting to hear my friend Ed Stetzer speak on Monday night. Ed brought his “A” game to Oklahoma! Very powerful message and delivered in “Ed-speak”.
But so far, the best highlight has been our convention’s response to The 6426 Project! This week we have had 566 Sunday School classes or small groups adopt an unreached people group to pray for during 2011. We are off to a great start and we have had multiple requests every day this week from classes wanting to adopt people groups. If you are interested in adopting an unreached people group, there will be info on the blog next week on the “6426 Project” tab at the top of the page! You will also be able to request a people group online here at the blog next week too.
